Holistic Dentist in Lake Oswego

holistic dentist lake oswego | woman at dentistThere are hundreds of dental materials out there and not all of them are good for everyone. Some patients may notice that their health suffers upon interaction with commonly used dental materials. That’s why holistic dentists like Dr. Bowden often use bio-compatible materials that won’t adversely react with your body chemistry. At Aesthetic Dentistry of Lake Oswego, we prioritize your whole-body wellness by treating your mouth as an integral part of your entire physical system, not in isolation. What Is Holistic Dentistry?

Holistic dentistry involves the use of alternative methods to treat oral health issues. Holistic dentists believe that overall health is tied to oral health and will utilize general dentistry practices alongside natural treatments and care. They emphasize prevention through good oral hygiene and personalized care while avoiding the use of materials that may harm your health.

Specialized Holistic Services

At Aesthetic Dentistry of Lake Oswego, we believe that oral health is fundamentally connected to your body’s overall well-being. By integrating advanced technology with a whole-body approach, we offer specialized holistic treatments designed to protect your health while enhancing your smile.

Ozone Therapy

Ozone therapy is a process that helps to destroy bacteria inside your mouth responsible for issues like decay and gum disease. It also helps promote a healthier oral environment and helps ensure that harmful bacteria don’t return.

Safe Mercury Removal

When you’re ready to remove your metallic restorations and replace them with safer composite alternatives, we practice safe mercury removal. While we’re removing your metallic fillings, we take steps to minimize your exposure using methods such as ventilation, vacuums, and thorough clean-up.

Non-Metallic Dental Restorations

Dr. Bowden can repair your smile without the use of potentially harmful metals using metal-free restorations. Composite materials reinforced with translucent fibers allow for long-lasting, more natural-looking, healthier restorations.

Saliva Testing

Gain valuable insights into your oral microbiome and overall health through our comprehensive saliva testing. This advanced diagnostic tool helps us identify specific bacteria and imbalances that may be contributing to oral health issues, allowing for more personalized and targeted treatment plans.

Everyone that works there is so kind and engaging.

I absolutely adore these people. I came to them after a horrible experience with another dentist in Lake Oswego left me feeling demeaned and humiliated. I have a couple of rare illnesses and had used a supplement that had created several cavities when I had previously been that patient that might need a filling every 5 years or so. The other clinic decided I was too much of a liability and “voted” to deny care to me after making me wait weeks to get in and charging me for my initial visit and extensive X-rays. Dr. Bowden and his staff didn’t bat an eye. Everyone that works there is so kind and engaging. I am not a nervous patient but do appreciate how gentle and thorough they are. Heated blankets and pillows, great music, and caring folks with a sense of humor make this office a real find. Thanks guys!

Why Choose Metal-Free & Biocompatible Dentistry?

Metals such as gold, silver, and titanium have been an instrumental part of dentistry for many years. However, the use of these common dental metals has been known to cause:

  • Allergic reactions
  • Mercury poisoning
  • Sensitivity to hot and cold
  • Staining/discoloration
  • Electric shock
  • Excessive enamel damage
  • Bodily rejection

Those patients who are very sensitive to metal, or whose health has been severely compromised, will also be more susceptible to these adverse effects. For reasons such as these, some holistic dentists will forgo metal restorations altogether and opt for composite restorations.

Additionally, many holistic dentists believe that any metal dental restoration, aside from being a possible allergen, will interfere with the normal flow of energy along the body’s meridians. This belief is based on an Eastern philosophy of healing that says that every organ and every part of the body is directly linked to a specific tooth via meridians or energy highways. Holistic dentists, who take into account every aspect of your health, are also not likely to be fond of metal restorations for this reason.

Frequently Asked Questions

Saliva testing is a powerful tool in personalizing holistic dental care, particularly when using advanced systems like the SillHa® Oral Wellness System. Saliva testing, through systems like SillHa, enhances the accuracy of dental care while empowering patients to take firmer control of their oral health with a more holistic approach.

Dental professionals can gather valuable insights into oral and systemic health beyond visual examination by analyzing a patient's saliva. Saliva contains important markers for bacteria levels, pH balance, enzymes, and other biological factors affecting oral and overall wellness.

What Is the SillHa Oral Wellness System?

The SillHa Oral Wellness System leverages saliva testing to detect early signs of potential issues like gum disease, tooth decay, or systemic inflammation. These results allow healthcare professionals to tailor treatment plans for each patient. This approach enables a more precise focus on each patient’s unique oral environment rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all solution.

With the data provided by saliva testing, a dental practice can offer personalized recommendations for daily care, diet, and lifestyle changes that specifically address the individual's oral health needs. Furthermore, by identifying specific bacteria or imbalances, they can create custom products or treatments to restore balance and optimize long-term dental health.

A Holistic Lake Oswego Dentist for Customized Preventive Care

If you’re in Lake Oswego and want to learn more about the awesome preventive and corrective capabilities of saliva testing with SillHa Oral Wellness for your long-term oral and overall health, contact Dr. Larry Bowden and the Aesthetic Dentistry of Lake Oswego team to schedule a consultation!

Your saliva holds essential clues about the health of your mouth and body. At Aesthetic Dentistry of Lake Oswego, we use the SillHa® Oral Wellness System to quickly and painlessly analyze saliva to identify biomarkers that can help detect early signs of oral disease, inflammation, and even certain systemic health risks.

By assessing just a small amount of saliva, SillHa provides insight into things like:

  • Oral acidity, which can affect enamel erosion
  • The presence of harmful bacteria that contribute to gum disease and tooth decay
  • Oxidative stress, which can reflect inflammation or infection
  • Buffering capacity, or how well your saliva protects against cavities

This detailed snapshot of your oral environment allows your dentist to personalize your treatment plan, whether that means nutritional guidance, changes to your hygiene routine, or early intervention before problems progress.

Unlike traditional exams that rely on visible signs, SillHa helps catch potential issues before you feel pain or notice symptoms. It’s a powerful tool for prevention — and a great way to avoid problems like gingivitis, periodontitis, or enamel loss.

Biocompatible materials are dental materials designed to work harmoniously with the body’s natural tissues. Unlike traditional metals or synthetic compounds that may trigger sensitivities or inflammation, biocompatible options minimize adverse reactions while supporting oral and overall health. As a biological dentist in Lake Oswego, OR, Dr. Larry Bowden uses these materials to promote safer, more holistic dental care.

What Is Biological Dentistry?

In biological dentistry, biocompatibility is especially important because it ensures that the materials placed in your mouth behave predictably and safely within your unique biology. BPA-free composites, ceramic restorations, and non-metal alternatives reduce the risk of allergic responses and help maintain the natural balance of the mouth. These materials also tend to integrate more naturally with tooth structure, enhancing comfort, durability, and aesthetics.

Whether you’re replacing an old restoration, treating decay, or seeking a more natural approach to dentistry, biocompatible materials offer reassurance that your dental care is actively supporting your overall health.

Key Benefits of a Holistic & Metal-Free Approach

Metal-Free Restorations

holistic dentist lake oswego | family smilingUnfortunately, certain metal dental restorations have been known to contain mercury. Elemental mercury, like the kind used in dental restorations, is a silver-white metal that’s liquid at room temperature. Mercury can be released as toxic vapor in your mouth, causing symptoms ranging in severity from coughing, to vomiting, to bleeding gums.

The most prevalent material used in metal-free dental restorations is based on the same composite material that’s used for fillings but reinforced with interspersed translucent fibers. When these fibers have been added to a composite, they can be as strong as the traditional porcelain-to-metal crown and serve as an excellent replacement for metal crowns and onlays.

Focus On Overall Health

Holistic dentists like Dr. Bowden focus on every aspect of your health to improve your oral health. Dr. Bowden focuses on encouraging your body to heal on its own, without using materials that can cause problems down the line. At our Lake Oswego office, we work closely with your physicians and naturopaths to customize treatment to improve every facet of your mental and physical health.

Emphasis on Safety

Holistic dentists take every step necessary to keep you safe and healthy. Whether we’re removing metallic restorations to replace them with composite alternatives, or doing a routine checkup, all of our staff implement measures to ensure you aren’t exposed to potentially harmful materials.
